New Ironman Record

Marino Vanhoenacker smashes Ironman World Record

Ironman Austria promised to be an exciting race this year and it certainly lived up to the hype. Last year Marino ‘Bink’ Vanhoenacker, fuelled by the leading sports nutrition brand High5, narrowly missed out on the Ironman World Record by 98 seconds but in 2011 he returned with a vengeance. His winning time was 7:45:58, smashing the old Ironman World record by over 4 minutes!

New Ironman RecordA 6th consecutive Ironman Austria win seemed like a formality for the Team Commerzbank athlete as the pro athletes lined up for the swim under blue skies and with virtually no wind. It proved to be perfect conditions for a fast race. Marino exited the water in 46:49min. That was already a minute faster than in 2010. He soon caught the leader Marko Albert as he pushed hard on the bike, early on averaging 43km/h. Even though he slowed down a little towards the end of the bike leg he still set the second fastest bike in Ironman history (4:15:37) and improved last year’s time by 3 minutes!

Marino’s closest challenger was Michael Weiss but even he was 7:34min back after Transition 2 and continued to lose time on the run as the flying Belgian was setting a pace of 3:43min/km. It was a memorable performance and the large crowd at the finish celebrated their champion in style.

Marino was ecstatic with his time, “This race surpassed anything in my sports life. It was perfect conditions today, I was in perfect shape at the right time, my material was excellent again and the crowd in Kärnten was better than ever. This definitely is my second home,” His next target will be the Ironman World Championships in October where he’ll be looking to improve on his 3rd place last year.

High5 is one of Marino’s strategic partners and he worked closely on his race nutrition plan with their team of nutrition experts. Tim Atkinson, High5 director, commented on the new World Record:”This is a fantastic achievement for Marino and very well deserved. We knew he was capable of breaking the record but to break it so convincingly is really special. After his result last year we did some testing on his race nutrition and this helped us make some important changes. We learnt that we could optimise his carbohydrate uptake using our new generation of 2:1 Fructose drinks with a moderate caffeine content. A higher energy supply means that he should be able to push harder on the bike and the run. Our High5 Race Faster Guides are the direct result of the testing we do with elite athletes. We already know from research that our products offer substantial performance benefits to endurance athletes at all levels. This backs up our claim to be the fastest sports nutrition in the world!”

The testing, which was performed at Hertfordshire University, involved riding for 3 hours and running for 2 hours, both at Ironman pace. From the data taken during the test, the leading scientists at the University were able to determine the maximum absorption level and therefore recommend a strategy based on Marino’s anticipated volume of drink consumption and the mixing concentration/ composition of the drinks.

Rasmus Henning Professional Ironman

Rasmus Henning wins with High5

Rasmus Henning took his first victory this year at the inaugural Challenge Fuerteventura, a middle distance triathlon. The 1.9km sea swim from the Playitas resort beach saw Rasmus lead fellow Dane and training partner Martin Jensen from the water with another High5 fuelled athlete, first year pro Daniel Halksworth, hot on their heals. Martin Jensen managed to gain a gap of 90 seconds during the 90km bike leg, arriving in T2 ahead of a closely bunched Henning, Bayliss and Halksworth. Henning proved to be the strongest, closing the gap on the run before pulling away to win comfortably ahead of Jensen.

Rasmus Henning Professional IronmanHenning has been using High5 Sports Nutrition products in training and competition since the beginning of the year. Having already come a close second twice, Henning was very happy with the win. After the race Henning commented on his race nutrition; “The nutrition seemed to work amazing. I stuck to the same regimen as in Texas, only I drank 250ml more since the bike was slower. I had no stomach issues and my energy levels were great all the way.” Henning’s race nutrition is based on High5’s new generation of 2:1 fructose drinks and Race Faster Nutrition Strategy.

High5 have designed an elite testing program to maximize race day performance. This is far beyond what any other nutrition company is offering. Working with the best long-distance athletes, Rasmus Henning and Marino Vanhoenacker, High5’s aim is to win the Ironman World Championships and record a new fastest ever Iron distance time to underline its position as the Worlds Fastest Sports Nutrition. 2010 Fastest Ironman Marino Vanhoenacker

Marino Vanhoenacker finishes a close second

Abu Dhabi International Triathlon was one of the most anticipated events in 2011 with most of the world’s top triathletes on the start line. In the end it was only 33 seconds between first and fourth. Marino Vanhoenacker summoned fifth gear in the last 10km and came within 17secs of the winner at the line.

2010 Fastest Ironman Marino VanhoenackerExtraordinarily Vanhoenacker did all this with a broken rib after a collision with a fellow swimmer less than 2 weeks before the race. Some athletes might have stayed at home, but Vanhoenacker still made it to the start line.

“I totally went under in the start and after 50m I’m 3rd last of the 45 guys,” Vanhoenacker explains about the swim leg. “At the end of lap 1, I luckily found contact with the second group and managed to hang in there but my wings didn’t turn like they should”

To make matters worse, Vanhoenacker lost his Oakley glasses and heads out into the desert storm without any eye protection. With Bracht and Llanos for company, he sets off in pursuit of the leaders but he is still 6’30 adrift of the lead and 1’55 down on the favourites going into T2.

But it was the run that really showed how strong Vanhoenacker is at this moment, “I tried to get of my bike carefully because now the ribs have to stretch again to run upright, but I completely cramp at that moment. On the run, people start to fly by and there’s nothing I can do, the body wants to stop. But around halfway some tension goes and I get into a rhythm and start running faster and faster. With 5 km to go I passed 3 guys and I am back in 3rd place now, 2’30 down on Frederik. I’m within striking distance of 2nd place, but then “BANG”, two people step out of a bus just in front of me, they are there before I can react and I hit them so hard I stumble, almost crash, what a hit! Then I got so angry and adrenaline started flowing so I took up the pace to a ridiculously fast speed and with 1km to go I pass 2nd and there I see Frederik ahead but I’m running out of ground and finish second. This was just a little bit too much even for me, I give full credit to Frederik, he made the race.”

Vanhoenacker works closely with High5 to optimize his race day performance. High5 Director Tim Atkinson commented on the result: “We tested Marino before he flew out to Abu Dhabi and we knew he was going really strong. With the help of the tests we worked out a new improved nutrition strategy for the race using the High5 2:1 Fructose formula which meant he was taking on more carbohydrate than he did previously. This meant he had more glycogens left in reserve for the run. We are committed to our elite athlete program because it helps with product development and our Race Faster Guides are a direct result of working with athletes like Marino.”

High5 have come up with an elite testing plan that is way beyond what any other nutritional company can provide to maximize race day performance. Working with the best long-distance athletes, High5 aim to win the Ironamn World Championships and record a new fastest ever Iron distance time to underline its position as the Worlds Fastest Nutrition.
