With 2020 nearly at a close and next summer to look forward to, it’s time to think about what challenges you might want to undertake for 2021. While many events this year were cancelled or postponed, leaving many of us disappointed, we can still look forward to the coming year!
Having an event planned in is a great way to keep up your motivation throughout winter and pre-season training, and with the second half of 2021 looking more hopeful in terms of races, now is a great time to start looking around for your next challenge!
We’ve picked out a range of events – both with HIGH5 on course and not – from all parts of the country and with a range of terrain, lengths and levels of intensity.
Here are our top tips for UK cycling events in 2021.
Tour of Cambridgeshire – 24th September 2021
If 100 miles of fully closed, traffic free roads sounds like your idea of cycling heaven, then look no further! The Tour of Cambridgeshire offers a full range of sportives, races and a time trial all over one weekend, meaning there’s something for every rider. With an indoor cycle show style exhibition on-site, this event has a real festival feel to it. But hurry, this event can sell out quickly!
London to Brighton Cycle Ride – 19th September 2021
Self-proclaimed the south’s iconic cycle ride, this ride should be on everyone’s bucket list. Whether you’re a new cyclist or a seasoned sportive rider, this 55-mile ride is great as a fundraiser for many causes. After a difficult 2020 for many charities with cancelled events and fundraisers, setting your next challenge up to raise money for a non-profit close to your heart is an ideal feel good goal! The ride itself is run by the British Heart Foundation, so if you don’t have any ideas of what charity to race for, you can help them out.
The Yorkshire Beast– 19th June 2021
There are challenging sportives out there… and then there’s the Yorkshire Beast. Dubbed the toughest day on a bike there is, the beast is 15,000ft of climbs over a brutal 200-mile course. Not tough enough? Throw in the Beast itself chasing you the whole way at a steady 12.5mph, and if he catches you… game over! This truly unique ride is one for the bucket list. Can you beat the beast?
Tour of Wessex – 29TH May 2021
If you fancy more than one day riding, the Tour of Wessex takes place over 3 days, covering either 220 or 330 miles. If that sounds a bit too easy, you can complete the entire 330-mile route in 24 hours! Covering some stunning cycle routes, each stage has a mix of monuments, history and challenging terrain, making it one to mark in the calendar.
Tweedlove Bike Festival – 17th September 2021
Set in the Tweed valley along the Scottish Borders, Tweedlove Bike Festival is an adrenaline fuelled celebration of off-road riding along some of the best riding trails in the country. There is a wide range of events to suit everyone taking place over one fun-filled weekend, finishing off with the perfect bike-ride afterparty featuring live music and great food and drink. After a cancelled 10 year celebration in 2020, the event promises an even more exciting programme for 2021!
Throughout the festival you’ll find HIGH5 on course to fuel you to the finish line.
Etape Loch Ness – 25th April 2021
If incredible scenery is your thing, this is the sportive for you. With 106km of traffic free roads circling the stunning Loch Ness and finishing in Inverness, this is certainly one to attend. While places for the 2021 ride have sold out (and for good reason!), we had to include this incredible sportive as one to try and snag a ticket to in 2022.
Fred Whitton Challenge – 9th May 2021
One of the longest standing Sportives – and one of the toughest – The Fred Whitton Challenge takes place across 113 miles of incredible Lake District scenery. Not one for beginners, it takes a lot of effort and willpower to finish the event in one day but offers a true sense of achievement for those who do. While the places for the cancelled 2020 event have been rolled on to 2021, some places will become available in January… so mark your calendars!
